Madeline Stewart
Hannah Murray
Madeline grew up in the kitchen, where she learned the love language of food. Her French chef father and naturopathic, certified nurse-midwife mother instilled in her a passion for great food and holistic health.
Madeline sang before she could talk and began her official dive into the world of music when she was four with the violin. She sang in her first opera at the age of 8 and never looked back. At 16, when studying both voice and violin proved to be too much, she switched her focus to studying voice exclusively. This passion for the voice led her to an undergraduate degree in vocal performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a master’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Oklahoma.
During her time at university, Madeline discovered the practices of running and yoga to manage the stress of being a student and a performer. Soon her movement practice evolved to include long course triathlon, marathon swimming, strength training, natural movement practices, and more. Madeline was deep into the world of endurance sports when she was in an accident that left her broken and required extensive rehabilitation. After a painful, frustrating, and confusing rehabilitation process, Madeline pivoted to pursue a career in health and wellness to support others in injury prevention and rehabilitation through a holistic and biopsychosocial approach.
Madeline is now a kinesiologist with a specialization in orthopedics, corrective exercise and performance psychology. In addition, her pursuit of learning and insatiable knowledge appetite has led her to acquire certifications in Nutritional Therapy, Holistic Yoga Therapeutics, MovNat, BIRTHFIT, Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization, Functional Range Conditioning, Kinstretch, and multiple yoga certification.
Madeline currently resides just south of Portland, Oregon, where, in addition to co-running corpSonore, she runs a private practice as a nutritionist, performance psychologist, and movement rehabilitation professional. Through her journey as a musician and health professional, she has come to believe deeply in the critical role of movement, nutrition, and mindset in a sustainable and fulfilling life as a musician.
Hannah started playing the violin when she was five years old, and it remains one of the organizing principles of her entire life. Every memory, experience, and milestone seem indelibly associated with music. She began her career as a Suzuki kid in Seattle, WA. Over time, her interests expanded to include rock tours in Europe, stadium shows in the United States, orchestral performances, chamber music, improvising for animals, and pretty much everything in between.
At 19, Hannah experienced a yoga class for the first time while at a summer music festival in Hawai'i (I know, I know). It quickly became a cornerstone of her wellness routine, easing the physical and mental duress in all aspects of her life. Her yoga practice eventually became the topic of her doctoral dissertation, "Using Iyengar Yoga to Enhance Violin Playing."
Alongside yoga, Hannah also found many other modes of movement that helped her feel embodied and strong. She has run marathons, trained for triathlons, is obsessed with horses and horseriding, loves a strenuous hike, can't resist a good swim, and is game for pretty much anything that raises her heart rate and boosts her mood.
Movement was Hannah’s entry point into gaining authority and cultivating presence as a musician. It opened the door to a wide range of wellness opportunities and experiences that have shaped her habits and informed her decisions. Currently based in Los Angeles, Hannah is the Violin Instructor at Mount Saint Mary's University, a principal player in the Tulsa Symphony, a certified yoga teacher, and the only Timani teacher in California. There are lots of other things to say, but we'll stop there for now.
