Winter Wellness Cocktail

By Madeline Stewart Dec. 18th, 2019

‘Tis the season for stuffy noses, sore throats and colds. These nasty little viruses can put a huge dent in your Holliday spirit, and make doing your job very difficult...especially if you have added travel or more festive performances to your plate.  A large part of the battle against getting sick is prevention. Here are some tips for avoiding getting sick:

  • Drink lots of water (at least half your body weight in ounces per day)

  • Avoid excess sugar and alcohol

  • Eat lots of fats and veggies

  • Get adequate sleep

  • Stay warm (especially your head)

  • Wash you hands

  • Avoid crowded public places as much as possible

On top of all these, here is a little recipe to help boost your immunity and kick a bug if you catch one. This recipe came from my sister, and was inspired by all that we have learned growing up with a naturopath and herbalist as a mother. My sister says she created this by throwing all the things she could think of in one pot...and I have seen it work wonders.

I like to make a big strong batch, and drink a cup in the evenings.

How to cook Winter Wellness Cocktail

  1. Bring water to a boil in a medium size pot. Once it has reached a boil reduce heat to a low simmer. Add grated ginger and turmeric root (I leave peel on, but you can peel if desired). Add lemon juice, oregano, cinnamon sticks, honey and cayenne. Simmer for 5min and then turn off heat and allow to sit for 5 more minutes. Taste and add more honey for more sweetness, and more cayenne if you like and can tolerate a little stronger kick. Strain through a sieve and store in the fridge. Enjoy warm or cold.
